Pujara puts India in control

Cheteshwar Pujara's unbeaten century put India in a strong position as home side recovered from the loss of their star batsmen to reach 307 for five at the close of the first day in the first Test against New Zealand at Hyderabad.

Pujara's maiden Test century was a patient affair, coming in 169 balls as the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar all perished. His unbeaten close-of-play score of 119 included a total of 15 fours and one six.
Pujara found a valuable ally in Virat Kohli until the latter was caught by Martin Guptill off Chris Martin for 58 after a fourth-wicket stand of 125 had taken the home side to 250.
Pujara then teamed up with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his unbeaten 29 from 37 balls took India past 300 without further loss.
The composed performance of Pujara contrasted with the hurried innings of opener Sehwag, who fell three runs shy of his half-century in the morning session with a rapid 47 off 41 balls.
Sehwag lived dangerously throughout, having been dropped early on and then seeing another dangerous shot whizz through the slips, and his luck caught up with him in the 15th over. He could have few complaints, however, with a poor shot comfortably held by Martin Guptill at second slip off Doug Bracewell.
Only two overs earlier, he had received the second of his two let-offs, with a shot off Bracewell splitting the slips as Kruger van Wyk and Ross Taylor were left looking at each other. In the ninth over, when on 23, he had been dropped by Daniel Flynn when offering a difficult chance at square leg off Chris Martin.
Gambhir had been the first to go, caught behind off Trent Boult after making 22.
Following their departures, the run rate slowed but India made good progress despite the loss of Tendulkar early in the afternoon session for 19, undone by a fine Boult delivery that nipped back in to strike the middle stump.
Pujara and Kohli then put India on course for a healthy first-innings total, and when the latter was dismissed Dhoni came in to help steer the home side to the close and the prospect of a big score on the second day.

"I'll look to perform and contribute to India's winning cause. I know that's the outcome if I win matches for India," Pujara.

Cricket-Patient Pujara holds firm for India

Pujara brings up second half-century in tests
* India lose Tendulkar in afternoon session (Updates at tea)
Aug 23 (Reuters) - Cheteshwar Pujara's patient half-century helped India overcome the loss of a trio of batting stalwarts and carried the hosts to 182 for three at tea on the first day of the opening test against New Zealand on Thursday.
At the interval, Pujara (54) and Virat Kohli (32) were at the crease, having added a valuable 57 runs for the fourth wicket.
Right-handed Pujara and Suresh Raina were included in the India team as replacements for the retired middle-order batting duo of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.
Walking in to bat at the number three spot vacated by Dravid, Pujara displayed a measured temperament akin to his predecessor and completed his second half-century in tests.
He hit six boundaries in his 121-ball knock with both Pujara and Kohli looking comfortable against the visitors' bowling.
The only wicket to fall in the afternoon session was that of batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who had hit two boundaries before he was clean bowled by left-arm seamer Trent Boult for 19.
The bowler was rewarded for his efforts when he got the ball to straighten after pitching and breached Tendulkar's defence to peg back his middle stump.
Earlier in the morning, openers Gautam Gambhir (22) and Virender Sehwag (47) put on 49 for the opening wicket to give India a flying start after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat.
Left-hander Gambhir was the first to depart when he edged Boult to wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk when trying to run the ball down to the third-man boundary.
Sehwag hit nine boundaries and survived two chances during his charmed 41-ball stay at the crease.
Daniel Flynn put down a difficult chance at square leg after the right-hander mistimed a pull off Chris Martin while an edge off Doug Bracewell flew between Van Wyk and captain Ross Taylor at first slip.
Bracewell finally got rid of the dangerous Sehwag after the batsman's attempted cut was snapped up by Martin Guptill at second slip.
The second match of the two-test series starts in Bangalore on Aug. 31. (Reporting by Sudipto Ganguly in Mumbai; Editing by John O'Brien)

Sonia Gandhi ranked world's sixth most powerful woman

Washington, Aug 22 — India's ruling United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi has been ranked sixth, a notch ahead of US first lady Michelle Obama, in the Forbes magazine list of 100 powerful women.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is ranked the most powerful in the world for the second year in a row in the annual list dominated by politicians, businesswomen and media figures.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is placed second, followed by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, making the top three spots unchanged from that of last year.
Besides Sonia Gandhi, the list released Wednesday features three other Indians.
Padmasree Warrior, chief technology and strategy officer, Cisco Systems, and Chanda Kochhar, managing director and CEO, ICICI Bank, are ranked 58th and 59th, while Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder and chair, Biocon Ltd, is placed 80th.
PepsiCo's Indian-American chairperson and CEO Indra Nooyi is ranked 12th.
The list named women involved in policymaking, entertainment, technology and nonprofit organisations, among other fields. They were ranked according to influence, the amount of money they control or earn, and media presence.
"These power women exert influence in very different ways and to very different ends, and all with very different impacts on the global community," said Moira Forbes, president and publisher of ForbesWoman.
Also in the top five were Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and wife of Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates, and Jill Abramson, executive editor of the New York Times.
US first lady Michelle Obama, who had topped the list in 2010, was ranked No.7.
The average age of the 100 powerful women from 28 countries was 55. They had a combined 90 million Twitter followers, Forbes said.

VVS- that artist dude next door

For a man as unhurried as he was at the batting crease, VVS Laxman left in a flash of lightning. From murmur to confirmation, the story of his exit traversed less than a day. Allowing little time for the cricket board to fathom the right response, leaving his family in shock and condemning cricket writers to turn over rapid copy on a figure they had grown accustomed to describing at leisure.

In the breathless emotion that followed his departure, one word has dominated the discourse: 'Artist'. Admittedly, it captures the Hyderabadi well, as the shape and form of his batting was justifiably artistic. The magnificence of Laxman's presence at the crease has been captured with much eloquence by writers more gifted than this one, so to attempt another such tribute would be foolish.
I have though been compelled to wonder in these last few days how a 'sporting artist' must find definition. For those of us who watch sport from the outside, it is essentially about appreciating angles. The 'artist' journeys us into the unreal, the unfathomable. He is Diego Maradona with a football at his feet. He is John McEnroe with a racquet in his hand. He is Shane Warne with a cricket ball in his palm.
Think angles- think Laxman. An out-swinger starting off-stump must be caressed through point or cover. Laxman would find mid-wicket. A leg-break aimed at the base of the front pad isn't destined for the extra cover fence. Laxman would caress it politely towards that destination. Think angles- think McEnroe. How the wrist would flick the forehand across court with a feather touch. Think angles- think Maradona. How the precision pass would dissect the defense. Think angles- think Warne. How once the batsman lost sight of the ball it would turn violently to crash into stumps he felt were safely protected. Angles- Laxman- Artist.
But we digress. For a man of such blessed gifts, Laxman was an oddball really. Being a maverick of sorts is acceptable, almost expected, in 'sporting artist' territory. The 'artist' is well aware his gift is a wonder. It evokes awe and applause, forces grown men to squeal and allows him excesses and intemperance. The shackles of discipline or the borders of acceptable conduct are not for him. For the impossible angles he conjures on the sporting field, the 'artist' feels entitled to transport the same off it.
Laxman was a startling contrast to the stereotype. I remember asking him once if he regarded himself as an 'artist'- carrying the legacy forward of Jaisimha and Azhar. He replied, radiant smile never leaving his face, "Not at all. I am in the team to score runs. That is my job. I am a batsman". Laxman was oblivious to his dazzle. He was miracle angles on the field, right angles off it. He was an oddball.
Laxman was bestowed with an unreal practicality. He was able to divorce emotion from both his thought and decision making process. At 17 he knew a successful career in medicine was his for the taking. Cricket was a considered punt- taken after consultation within a family that was ingrained in academia. He set himself a five year limit to discover where the game would take him. Or else, there was medicine.
A conversation with Laxman, both on and off the record, was always a chat between equals. There was no aura to his presence, only candour. I remember interviewing Laxman when he completed a hundred Tests and asked if he ever felt upset at not being considered for India captaincy. His response was incredibly logical, "Look, if you see the guys who were my contemporaries- Sourav and Rahul, both were slightly senior to me. By the time they were done as captains, a new leader had to be groomed. So I could completely understand why I was never made captain". There was no space for bitterness, only a pragmatic recognition of the times he played in.
There were regrets as you would expect, but Laxman developed an uncanny ability to mask those. Not playing enough one-day cricket and a World Cup were on top of that list. "Anyone who is dropped expects to be given a reason why he was dropped. I was never given a reason", he told me once. Where was the need for a snub, he was arguing, when a conversation would have sufficed? Perhaps, I might have been convinced, had you only tried- Sourav, Rahul, John?
It is for this unflappable poise that Virender Sehwag likes calling Laxman "Sai Baba". In a disarming conversation once Laxman said how he found it difficult to explain to his son why he wasn't in any commercials on TV, when all his other 'uncles' were! I never spotted a trace of envy in his voice, even when he talked of how he willingly gave up the status of icon player for the Deccan Chargers; forsaking a massive amount of money so the franchise had more to spend on purchasing players. A couple of years later the same owners dumped him. When his new IPL home Kochi went under, I asked him, what now? He chuckled, "We all go into the auction, but no one will want me!" There was a near pious sarcasm to those words, no rancour even as he gazed correctly into the crystal ball.
When I scroll down the directory in my mobile phone, I find numbers for a stream of player agents; the bridge between us journalists and superstar cricketers. Except I don't have one for Laxman. Why? - Because he doesn't have one! If he calls you, the screen doesn't flash "private number calling" as is the case with most prominent Indian cricketers. He probably doesn't even know how to activate that service! On the morning of his retirement, I felt privileged to get a call from him- "Press conference at 4pm today Gaurav, I will be announcing my retirement. Thanks to you and your channel for all the support". My voice quivered in response, his was stoic.
I remember one other incident with fondness. While my crew was setting up for an interview at his Hyderabad apartment once, the power failed. So we waited and Laxman waited with us. A few minutes later, he casually strolled into the kitchen and served water to the entire crew in little steel glasses! There was no gimmickry, just what you would do when there were people sat in your living room!
In the ordinariness of VVS Laxman's world, cricket was just something he did. Beyond it, we were all just your every day people. As a man destined for medicine, he perhaps had no appetite for the joys of poetry. He could inspire it among the followers, but never succumbed to its seduction himself. That Laxman is still around of-course, and he is Very Very special. The artist may be gone, but the regular dude, well look him up if you are ever in Hyderabad!

Vilasrao Deshmukh passes away

CHENNAI: Union minister and former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who has been battling liver cancer in a city hospital, died here on Tuesday afternoon. He was 67.

Having registered with the Tamil Nadu organ registry for a liver and a kidney, Vilasrao's case was cleared as a 'super ultra emergency'. He was to receive the organs from a 31-year-old man who was declared brain dead at the Government General Hospital, Chennai on Monday afternoon, but the prospective donor suffered a cardiac arrest in the early hours of Tuesday before his organs could be harvested. Two more set of organs were available by Tuesday morning, one from the General Hospital, Chennai, where a 20-year-old woman was declared brain dead, and another from Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai. But transplant surgeons at Global Hospitals found Vilasrao's condition was too unstable to undergo the procedure. "His condition was getting worse from early morning," said a treating doctor. "Though a transplant was the only option, the chances of his surviving the long and complex procedure looked bleak."

Vilasrao Deshmukh's health condition has been see-sawing since he was brought to Chennai last Tuesday by an air ambulance. On Saturday, doctors said his condition was stable. Since his other organs stood the risk of failing, and doctors had to prevent further infection, he was moved from the general ICU to an isolated unit on Saturday. The same day his name was registered with the TN organ registry which allots cadaver organs for transplant.

His actor son Riteish Deshmukh was registered with the authorities as a part-liver donor, but doctors said Vilasrao Deshmukh needed a full liver, which meant they had to get the organ from a brain-dead person. If a kidney was available, doctors said, they would transplant that too, since his kidneys had also failed.

A dual transplant looked likely on Monday after the family of the 31-year-old brain-dead man at Chennai GH agreed to donate his organs. A team of doctors from Global Hospitals reached GH, but because of some procedural delays, the organs could not be harvested. In the mean time, the prospective donor suffered a cardiac arrest, making it impossible for the doctors to retrieve and use the liver and kidney. On Tuesday, the transplant surgeons were presented with two opportunities of organs, from Mumbai and the Chennai GH, but before they could harvest the organs, Vilasrao Deshmukh's condition worsened by Tuesday afternoon and he breathed his last.

The funeral procession will start at 3 pm and last rites would be performed at 4 pm, he said.

World’s tallest statue planned near Narmada dam-Sardar Patel statue

According to the Times of India report dated 11 August 2010, Gujarat Chief minister Narendra Modi is learnt to have approved a proposal, floated by Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) Chairman D Rajagopalan, to construct the world’s tallest 180 metres statue, of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, in the Narmada river, near the Narmada dam.
The statue, according to TOI report will be 40 metres higher than the dam’s full reservoir level, 138.64 metres, and eight metres taller than the earth’s highest statue of Crazy Horse Memorial sculpture being carved in Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, a state in north central US.
Ahmedabad based Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology(CEPT) University will carry out a detailed study of the topography of the river and report if such a huge structure can be installed there. It has to have a very wide base and would have to be connected with a bridge so that tourists could reach up to the statue, said an official. “According to the presentation, there would have to be a lift that will carry tourists right to the top in order to see the dam from afar, according to report.
While officials in the SSNNL claimed money may not be a problem, a top aide of chief minister Narendra Modi said, "One has to take into account cost escalation while building such kind of a statue. It is possible that by the time the state government floats tenders, the cost of the project would have escalated to Rs 2,500 crore".
The Gujarat government has collected Rs 55 crore for the high-profile project. Of this, Rs 50 crore has been collected from different state public sector undertakings, while Rs 5 crore has been contributed by Adani group. The PSUs have provided money from their corporate social responsibility funds.
Called Statue of Unity, to be built on Sadhu island which is about 3.5 km downstream of Narmada dam, the state government has formed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust to implement the project.
As per the official note, the consultant will be required to do overall area planning, including spaces for hospitality, health, education, convention and training centres, development and formulation of tourism plan and provide technical and managerial assistance for bids to invite EPC contract.
